Oil continued to lose ground on Thursday, plunging around 4% as investors increased their disappointment with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) decision to extend the current output cut deal for another nine months until March 2018. Many investors were hoping the deal will be implemented for a longer period of time since a majority of traders believe the nine-month period will not be sufficient to battle the existing crude market oversupply and stabilize the prices.

West Texas Intermediate for July delivery plunged 4.07% to trade for $49.30 per barrel at 6:26 pm CET while international benchmark Brent for settlements in the same month lost 3.54%, changing hands for $52.38 per barrel at the same time after declining almost 4% earlier in the session.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Energy Khalid A. Al-Falih noted that he considers the current extension period "optimal." However, Al-Falih said that the deal might be further extended in November while he also stressed that the exit strategy for production cuts must be developed.
